Lahore, Pakistan – April 16, 2025 – In a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s medical and rehabilitation sector, Prosthetists and doctors at the Hope Rehabilitation Society in Lahore have successfully implanted the country’s first electronic C-leg in a 34-year-old woman from Hyderabad, Sindh. This groundbreaking procedure, performed on April 16, 2025, marks a significant step forward in prosthetic technology, offering enhanced mobility and independence to individuals with disabilities.

The patient, whose leg was amputated 21 years ago due to cancer, received the advanced C-leg, a state-of-the-art electronic prosthesis designed to transform the lives of amputees. Following the implantation, the woman is now capable of standing and walking independently, a remarkable improvement in her quality of life.

The electronic C-leg, developed using cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, is equipped with innovative features to support a wide range of daily activities:

  • Mobile Phone Control: The leg can be controlled via a smartphone app, allowing the user to adjust its speed and responsiveness for various tasks.
  • Anti-Stumble Technology: Embedded sensors detect potential trips and react instantly to prevent falls, ensuring user safety.
  • Long-Lasting Battery: The leg’s battery provides up to 20 hours of continuous use, enabling the patient to walk up to five kilometers daily without needing a recharge.
  • Natural Gait Adaptation: The prosthesis adapts to the user’s movements, providing a smooth and natural walking experience.

The Hope Rehabilitation Society, a leading center for disabled persons in Pakistan, has been at the forefront of body rehabilitation for the past 35 years. The successful implantation of the electronic C-leg is a testament to the center’s commitment to embracing advanced technology to improve lives. Dr. Khalid Niazi, President of the Hope Rehabilitation Society, highlighted the significance of this milestone: “The implantation of the electronic C-leg is a major success for Pakistan. This technology will empower disabled individuals to lead independent lives and rely less on others.”

Dr. Niazi further elaborated on the C-leg’s capabilities, noting that it represents a significant upgrade from traditional prosthetics. “This leg not only supports daily routines but also promotes confidence and mobility,” he said. The ability to cover five kilometers daily and its 20-hour battery life make it a practical and transformative solution for amputees.

Until recently, access to such advanced prosthetic technology required patients to travel abroad, often at great expense. The availability of the electronic C-leg in Pakistan eliminates these barriers, making high-quality rehabilitation services more accessible. The successful procedure at the Hope Rehabilitation Society is expected to pave the way for further advancements in the country’s prosthetic and rehabilitation sector.

“This achievement is a proud moment for Pakistan,” Dr. Niazi stated during a press conference on April 16, 2025. “The Hope Rehabilitation Society is dedicated to continuing its mission of transforming lives through innovative rehabilitation solutions.”

The 34-year-old patient, whose identity has been kept confidential, expressed her gratitude for the life-changing procedure. After 21 years of living with a disability, she can now walk with confidence and perform daily tasks with greater ease. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact that advanced medical technology can have on individual lives.
