AI Enhances Radiation-Free Scoliosis Monitoring in Pediatric Patients

For parents of children with scoliosis, frequent trips to the doctor and repeated X-rays can be stressful—both for the child and the family. But a new pilot program at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s is changing the game, using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor spinal curves at home—without radiation.

The program, powered by Momentum Spine, an AI-driven mobile platform, turns a simple 30-second smartphone video into a detailed 3D model of a child’s torso. Parents record the video at home while walking around their standing child, and the software analyzes spinal curvature, tracks progression, and even measures shoulder asymmetry and height growth—all without a single X-ray.

“This technology is a true game changer,” says Dr. David Skaggs, co-director of Cedars-Sinai Spine. “Many of our patients live far from our center, and now they can get accurate scoliosis assessments without travel. Since scoliosis can worsen quickly in growing kids, early detection is crucial.”

Traditionally, monitoring scoliosis meant regular in-person visits and X-rays to measure the Cobb angle—the key indicator of spinal curvature. But repeated radiation exposure carries long-term risks, and self-reported brace compliance isn’t always reliable.

Momentum Spine solves both problems. The app not only provides radiation-free scans but also includes smart sensors embedded in custom back braces. These sensors track how long the brace is worn each day, sending real-time data to doctors.

“Parents can now actively partner with their child’s care team,” says Elaine Butterworth, a pediatric nurse navigator at Cedars-Sinai. “They get peace of mind knowing their child’s progress is closely monitored, and doctors can step in sooner if needed.”

For families in rural areas or those with limited access to specialists, the technology is a lifeline—reducing travel while improving care. Philippe Miller, CEO of Momentum Health, calls the partnership with Cedars-Sinai a “major leap forward” in pediatric spinal health.

The future of scoliosis care is here—and it’s as simple as a smartphone scan.
