ICRC Pakistan Observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Islamia College, Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) at Islamia College Peshawar, under the global theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

The event, held on Thursday, highlighted the vital role of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in decision-making processes that influence their lives and communities. Since 2012, the ICRC has actively marked this day to promote social inclusion and raise awareness about the challenges faced by PWDs.

Speaking on the occasion, Nicolas Lambert, Head of Delegation for ICRC Pakistan, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to empowering PWDs socially and economically. “The ICRC has been providing physical rehabilitation services in Pakistan since 1984. This year alone, approximately 7,000 individuals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have benefited from our services,” he shared.

Lambert emphasized the ICRC’s innovative approach in producing assistive devices locally, using indigenous materials to ensure affordability without compromising on international standards. “Our focus extends beyond rehabilitation. We aim to achieve socioeconomic empowerment through education, vocational training, sports, and microeconomic initiatives,” he added.

Fazal Moqeem Khan, President of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), graced the event as the chief guest. He called for collaborative efforts to enhance opportunities for PWDs, including increasing the employment quota, providing interest-free loans, and facilitating connections between PWD entrepreneurs and national and international markets.

“These platforms not only showcase the talents of young individuals with disabilities but also inspire society to prioritize inclusion,” he said.

The event culminated in a one-day sports festival featuring a cricket match for individuals with disabilities. Participants and officials were awarded prizes, symbolizing the importance of fostering inclusivity in all aspects of life.

Representatives from the Chal Foundation also received special recognition for their innovative contributions toward accessibility and inclusivity. Their efforts, aligned with the theme, “Empowering Accessibility for All,” were celebrated during the event.

The IDPD observance reflected the ICRC’s commitment to building a more inclusive society by amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities and ensuring they are active contributors to a sustainable future.
