The Helping Hands Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (HHIRS) is fast becoming a leader in the field of prosthetic and orthotic education in Pakistan, thanks to its comprehensive BS Prosthetic and Orthotic Program. Spearheaded by Mr. Rafaqat Afridi, an experienced Orthotist Prosthetist with a Master’s degree from the University of Strathclyde, UK, the program is shaping the future of healthcare by preparing the next generation of experts in this essential field.
The BS Prosthetic and Orthotic Program at HHIRS is a four-year degree designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. According to Mr. Afridi, the program is modeled on international standards, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the needs of individuals with limb loss or neuromuscular conditions.
“What sets our program apart is our emphasis on practical, hands-on experience,” said Mr. Afridi. “We have state-of-the-art labs and workshops that allow students to apply their learning to real-world cases. In addition, we encourage a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.”
Mr. Afridi, who has brought a wealth of international experience to HHIRS, credits his education at the University of Strathclyde for shaping his approach to both teaching and practice. “My time in the UK helped me integrate evidence-based practices into the curriculum here at HHIRS. We prioritize critical thinking and innovative problem-solving, making sure our students are ready to tackle the challenges they’ll face in the field.”
The field of prosthetics and orthotics in Pakistan is still growing, and students in this area often face significant challenges. These include a lack of resources and limited awareness about the importance of prosthetic and orthotic services. However, HHIRS is working hard to overcome these hurdles by providing students with access to the latest tools and technologies, as well as offering outreach programs aimed at increasing public awareness.
“Adaptability is key,” Afridi noted. “We teach our students to think creatively, especially in resource-limited settings. Even when technology or materials are scarce, the quality of care should never be compromised.”
Looking to the future, Afridi hopes to expand the program’s research capabilities and establish international collaborations. “We want to be a leader not just in Pakistan but in the region. Our goal is to continue raising the bar for education and research in prosthetics and orthotics,” he said.
HHIRS encourages students interested in the program to explore their website for further information about admissions and requirements. Mr. Afridi also offered advice to prospective students: “This field is incredibly rewarding, but it demands dedication. Stay curious, keep learning, and always be ready to push the boundaries.”
With a strong vision and a commitment to excellence, HHIRS is paving the way for advancements in prosthetic and orthotic care, setting new standards for education in this vital healthcare field.
