PIPOS Likely to Be Included Under Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms Act

The provincial government is considering extending the Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms Act (MTIRA) to the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences (PIPOS), along with Paraplegic Centre Peshawar, and Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals, Swat. The proposal, submitted by the Insaf Doctors Forum (IDF), is currently under review by the health department, with the final decision resting with Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur.

IDF, a key advocate of PTI’s health reforms, played a pivotal role in the original implementation of MTIRA in 2015, which was enforced in 10 teaching hospitals across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a phased manner. The forum is now pushing for the inclusion of additional institutions under the law to enhance their performance and operational efficiency.

“We plan to meet the chief minister soon to discuss the proposal,” said a senior IDF official. According to sources, the health department has sought feedback from the heads of the institutions, and PIPOS has already submitted its comments on the matter.

PIPOS: A Pioneer in Orthotics Prosthetics , established in 1984 to provide rehabilitation services for individuals with physical disabilities, PIPOS has played a leading role in advancing prosthetic and orthotic sciences in Pakistan. Declared an autonomous body by the provincial government in 1999, PIPOS offers a four-year degree program in Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences in collaboration with Khyber Medical University (KMU).

In addition to its academic achievements, PIPOS is instrumental in providing rehabilitation services that help individuals with physical challenges regain independence and reintegrate into society. Its inclusion under MTIRA could establish a dedicated Board of Governors (BoG) to further strengthen its governance, ensuring higher-quality care and operational improvements.

Sources indicate that the provincial government is supportive of the IDF’s recommendations, recognizing the forum’s role in previous health reforms. If approved, the inclusion of PIPOS under MTIRA would align it with the province’s broader healthcare goals and further strengthen their contributions to public health and rehabilitation services.

The proposed reforms aim to consolidate governance, streamline operations, and improve patient care across these institutions, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to healthcare development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
