Revolutionizing Rehabilitation in Pakistan: Koalaa Prosthetics Training Equips Clinicians for Transformative Care

In an inspiring step towards advancing rehabilitation in Pakistan, Rehab Initiative (RI),Pakistan in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Koalaa Soft Prosthetics (UK), hosted a groundbreaking two-day training session titled “Empowering Rehabilitation through Innovation: Koalaa Prosthetics Training for Clinicians in Pakistan.” Held on November 12-13, 2024, at RI’s facility, the event marked a pivotal moment for clinicians in the country as they became the first in Asia to explore and implement Koalaa’s revolutionary prosthetic solutions.

Koalaa’s soft prosthetics bring an innovative approach to the field. Unlike traditional prosthetic devices, Koalaa introduces a fabric-based solution that blends lightweight textiles with cutting-edge design. This novel approach prioritizes patient comfort without sacrificing functionality, offering a game-changing alternative for individuals with upper-limb amputations.

The design allows for quick fittings—prostheses can be adapted to below-elbow amputees and partial hand amputees in under an hour. The solution is accessible, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure and extensive setup.

Koalaa prosthetics are available in various kits tailored to different needs. The AlX Kit includes soft socket sleeves in sizes ranging from S to XL, multiple wrist units, and interchangeable terminal devices, making it versatile for a range of patients. Meanwhile, the PAW Kit addresses partial hand amputations, featuring sleeves and terminal devices designed specifically for this group.

The training was led by two experts from Koalaa Soft Prosthetics: Niall Marshall, Head of Global Access, and Didier Cooreman, Assistive Technology Consultant. The program drew a total of 26 participants, including prosthetists, orthotists, and physical therapists from partner and non-partner Physical Rehabilitation Centers (PRCs) across Pakistan.

The interactive sessions offered hands-on experience with the fitting process, showcasing how the soft fabric prosthetics can be efficiently adjusted for various patient needs. This capacity-building initiative aligns with RI’s vision of transforming rehabilitation services by equipping local clinicians with state-of-the-art expertise.

The partnership between RI, ICRC, and Koalaa underscores a shared commitment to improving the quality of life for people with limb loss. By training clinicians to adopt Koalaa’s innovative technology, the initiative aims to:

Accelerate the fitting process, enabling faster patient care.

Promote independence for individuals with limb loss.

Enhance the quality of rehabilitation services across Pakistan.

“Koalaa prosthetics represent a revolutionary step forward. They not only simplify the process but also make prosthetics more accessible to those who need them the most,” remarked a participating clinician.

This training marks the beginning of a transformative journey in prosthetic care in Pakistan. By empowering clinicians with the tools and knowledge to implement Koalaa’s solutions, RI and its partners are setting the stage for widespread access to innovative rehabilitation services.
