Peshawar (Report by Fatima Jafar) – Dr. Nabeela Soomro, a highly respected figure in physical rehabilitation and CEO of the Sindh Institute of Medicine and Physical Rehabilitation (SIMPR) in Karachi, recently conducted a comprehensive visit to the Paraplegic Center Peshawar (PCP). Her tour included the male and female wards, the outpatient department, the clubfoot clinic, the autism spectrum section, and the orthotics manufacturing unit, showcasing the center’s extensive rehabilitation services for people with disabilities (PWDs).
Joined by PCP’s leadership team, including Chairman Zia-ur-Rehman, Chief Executive Dr. Syed Muhammad Ilyas, and Rehab Director Dr. Amir Zaib, Dr. Soomro expressed admiration for PCP’s achievements, particularly its innovative approach to customized wheelchair production. Dr. Soomro emphasized that the local manufacturing of adaptive devices, such as wheelchairs, could greatly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on costly imports, benefiting both the healthcare system and local industry.
PCP is recognized for its specialized treatment of spinal cord injuries and serves as a model for rehabilitating individuals who face significant mobility challenges. Beyond physical care, the center provides vocational training, enabling patients to reintegrate into society as productive members. This commitment to comprehensive care, using affordable locally developed technology, highlights PCP’s role as a pioneering rehabilitation institution in Pakistan and the surrounding region.
